What is the best way to get a musty smell out of antique furniture?
How can you do it without harming the wood?? It is really stinking up my bedroom!! Help!
You didn't describe the furniture--chair, chest of drawers----
Filling the drawers with kitty litter works---litter absorbs the smell.
Problem could be mildew
The problem is quite possibly mildew. You can take a spray bottle, such as an empty window cleaner bottle and add one part household bleach and nine parts water. It's best if you can get the dry sink outside to do the spraying, because the bleach solution will damage carpeting, drapes, paint, your clothes or almost anything else it gets on. Be sure not to spray it on the outside finish of the dry sink.
Spray inside surfaces
Pull out any drawers and empty them and open any doors. Spray all inside surfaces that are raw wood until they're damp, including the inside and outside of the drawers (but not the front). Lay it on it's back and spray any surfaces that you couldn't get to before. Wiping with a cloth isn't as effective as spraying, because you can't get the solution in all the nooks and crannies or cover the surface as evenly or as easily.
Orange Oil
After everything dries you can spray it with orange oil. The orange oil will help replenish oils in the wood and will smell pleasant.
You may have to repeat the process a couple of times, but eventually it should smell ok. You'll need to watch your cat though if it's an orange one like ours, because it'll make you think it's a tail twitching orange when it comes out after the treatment.
The orange smell will diminish after a while
