Can anyone reccomend markets in france to buy antique furntiure.?
We have just bought our first house, circa 1900 and it needs a total refurb and redecorating. We want to fill it with unique,antique furniture, rugs,beds etc. We would like to take my van on a holiday and fill it up. Can anyone reccomend a region/market. We have been to Paris and it was too expensive?
In France people still have a real regard for antiques and unique articles are rapidly snapped up. Antique markets take place all over France but not necessarily on a regular basis. It depends on the municipality and the time of the year, for instance the town of Lisieux in Normandy has a gigantic antique market once a year on a Sunday towards the end of the summer. Municipalities determine the dates of "brocantes"as they involve special policing and road closures.
There are still a lot of independent brocanteurs in small towns and this is where you are more likely to find what you are looking for. A good source is in fact to go to local auctions rather than markets. A great deal of the good stuff is bought by dealers in the provinces and is then taken to Paris. Lyon has a profusion of antique dealers in a special area near the grand place
I would go to Carthar or Basque country where there are less tourists and a better chance to find something original, or Burgundy where less foreigners have settled.
