Which finish for newly sanded pine floorboards?
I am shortly to sand down an expanse of fairly modern pine floorboards throughout my downstairs reception room and kitchen. The reason being, the current surface appears to have an unpleasant yellow-y/orange varnish which I don't like and is impossible to keep looking clean (i.e. it never appears clean even when thoroughly scrubbed and washed). The timber itself is not particularly characterful or attractive, being relatively modern (maybe 15 years old or so), but in very sound condition. It looks just like cheap pine planks purchased from a timber wholesaler. My builder has recommended Danish Oil as a finish, but I am not sure. Does anyone have any other suggestions that will keep the wood looking fairly light and natural looking, be durable and not trap dirt?
Whatever you choose, do not choose a water based finish..it does not wear near as well as oil based finishes needed for traffic.
I have to agree with your builder...danish oil is really nice, but not used by the average person. I have an oil rubbed finish on my oak planking and am very happy with it, but I suggest you do some research through google about different finishes for wood flooring and decided from this. I will say that a matte or oil finish will not show the dings and scratches that are bound to happen from daily living and pets like a gloss finish...just something to keep in mind. Talk to your builder and have him give you some sample pieces of different finishes for you to look at...this can help too. This is a personal choice, so do your research and see the finishes in person (you can check out finishes in local flooring stores too) before making your final decision and do not rush into a choice.
