Expensive Antique Furniture
What does "afford" mean?
I just went up on the website for Bob's Discount Furniture.
They have some truly hideous, awful furniture - really ugly. And it's "cheaper" than, well, than some of the more expensive, not-quite-as-hideous furniture you might see at supposedly higher-end stores.
But it's still $200 for an "occasional table" - or $300-$400 for a coffee table....
You can be gorgeous antiques, if you shop around, for less than twice that. Some items you can buy for about the same price - say if you find a dealer who has to relocate or close down.
And you don't "need" any of it - not to live. However long you saved up to buy the Bob's stuff - say 2-3 months - why not just save up for 4-6 months and furnish the place with antiques? You can always sell them for what you paid for them (unlike Bob's), they're not embarrassing (unlike Bob's), you never have to redecorate and they're usually much better made - they actually last longer.
Why don't more people do this?
i fail to see where this has anything to do with politics unless there is some "subliminal" message here. That message to me is generalized towards society's habit of purchasing items based on what they can "afford" right then instead of taking the time to wait and make and investment. We want what we want when we want it and based on that, we buy what we feel we can "afford".
